WILKIE D. WALKER SR.

June 10, 1925 — February 17, 2024

Wilkie D. Walker was born on June 10, 1925, to Lewis and Mabel (Castleberry) in Greggton, TX. At age 18, he entered the Army and served in World War II. He fought in Rome, Italy and as he loved to tell the story, “We were in battle for one full year! I watched death all around me, but I came out without a scratch.”  Mr. Walker received three Bronze Stars for meritorious service in a combat zone. The Bronze Star is given for sacrifice, bravery, and honor while serving one’s country. He was also awarded three Overseas Service Bars, a Victory Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal.

When he returned to the States, he married Minnie V. Ingram (deceased) with whom he had three sons, Wilkie Jr., Larry, and Alvin. His daughters Bernadine Powell and Carolyn Polk were born to him by Ophelia Powell (deceased). His daughter Linda Hogan was born to him by Katie Mae Hall.

Mr. Walker worked for the Dallas Housing Authority, Parkland and Baylor Hospitals, DISD and finally at Walmart as a greeter. He loved being among the public and was a favorite in the lawn and garden department. Affectionately known as “Big Shot,” Mr. Walker was a huge follower of all sports. He was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan and recently attended a Texas Rangers game the same year the team won the World Series.

More than anything, Mr. Walker was especially proud of his family. Pictures of all his grandchildren decorated his walls and he carried special photos of those he loved in his wallet. Wilkie D. Walker leaves behind his sisters Doris Acey and Ella Hardaway; his sons and daughters; his grandchildren Keith, Kenneth, Kevin, David, LaTricia, Sondra, Delynn, Roosevelt III, Marquis, Ryan, Angela, Brian, and Tanequa; a host of great-grandchildren; and 98 years of wonderful stories and memories!
